Interesting facts about the Ukrainian language

Ukrainian is the official language of Ukraine. It is spoken at all levels and in all institutions of Ukraine. It is interesting that Ukrainian nightingale was not created separately from other languages. Here you can find many borrowings from other countries, both in the original and modified form.

  • There are no exact data on the age of the Ukrainian language. Despite this, it can be confidently stated that it arose much earlier than German, Russian or Turkish. According to scientist Vasyl Kobylyukh, the first seeds of the Ukrainian language appeared in the X-IV centuries BC as a derivative of Sanskrit (an ancient language that was formed in Ancient India).
  • After the emergence of Nightingale, many centuries passed before it was recognized as a full-fledged language in 1842. None other than the Ukrainian writer Ivan Kotlyarevsky contributed to this recognition. It was from his pen that the famous “Aeneid” came out, which marked the beginning of the new Ukrainian language.
  • Thanks to the new Ukrainian orthography, which came into effect on June 3, 2019, very interesting and important innovations appeared in the Ukrainian language. In particular, feminitives began to be used – feminine nouns that correspond to the meaning of masculine words belonging to both sexes. For example, a writer is a writer, a teacher is a teacher, a philologist is a philologist, etc.
  • The most popular consonant letter in the Ukrainian language is the letter “п”. The largest number of words begins with it. What can you say about the letter “ф”, with which words of foreign origin usually begin – it is used the least.
  • An interesting fact: the longest word in the Ukrainian language consists of (just imagine!) as many as 30 letters and sounds like this: “дихлордифенілтрихлорметилметан”. It stands for the name of the pest control chemical. Now try to pronounce it without stuttering!
  • Many beautiful works have been written in the Ukrainian language, which have already managed to become the cultural heritage not only of Ukraine, but also of the whole world. What is the value of “Kobzar” alone Taras Shevchenko, which has been translated into 100 different languages of the world! But all the same, Kobzar’s “Testament” remains the record holder – it has been translated into almost 150 languages!
  • For many years, we were told that the Ukrainian language is very similar to Russian, but this is not true. In fact, Belarusian is the closest to Ukrainian in terms of vocabulary (84%), followed by Polish (70%), Serbian (68%) and only after that Russian (62%).
  • In learning, for example, the English language, many people have difficulties with distinguishing tenses. And have you ever thought about the fact that the Ukrainian language also has several forms of the future tense? Let’s take for example the verb “to read”, which can be used in the simple form “I will read”, the complex form “I will read” or the complex form “I will read”.
  • The Ukrainian language is rich in synonyms. In the “Short dictionary of synonyms of the Ukrainian language” you can familiarize yourself with 4279 synonymous series. For example, the word “horizon” has 12 synonyms. But this is only the beginning. There are as many as 45 of them in the word “beat”!
  • Another interesting feature that the Ukrainian language can boast of is palindromes. Palindromes are words that are read the same way from right to left and, conversely, from left to right. For example, radar, Philip, grandfather, eye, etc. By the way, the monkey Fruzya from Ivan Franko’s fairy tale “Mykyta the Fox” spoke an unusual “palindromic” language.
