The animal world is very diverse. Predators, herbivores, insects, and even arachnids are harmoniously combined here. Their symbiosis is much more complicated than it might seem at first glance. Each animal performs an important function in nature, and its behavior or actions can tell a lot not only about the lifestyle of one specific animal, but also about the species as a whole. And a lifetime will not be enough to learn absolutely everything about them!
Here are some interesting facts:
- Have you ever tickled a rat? If so, he must have laughed a lot. Scientists have investigated that these animals laugh when they are tickled. Such a discovery can help in further studies of the human brain.
- Those who don’t have time for mischief are squirrels – these animals are forced to constantly take care of the storage for their food, as they very quickly forget where they buried their seeds. One can only imagine how many new trees have grown thanks to these furry gardeners.
- But we will talk not only about animals. Another creature on which the fate of the tree may depend is the woodpecker. By the way, they do not know how to stand on the ground. Woodpeckers hold on to the bark of trees perfectly with their claws, but their body structure does not allow them to be in a vertical position.
- Hummingbirds are also not far behind in the list of the most interesting birds and animals. These little birds are so agile that they can fly forward on their backs.
- Nevertheless, some insects will be difficult for hummingbirds to catch. For example, a housefly can fly at a speed of 6.4 km/h, a fruit fly develops a speed of up to 11 km/h, and a dragonfly can fly at a speed of 22.4 km/h. The housefly evades the fly swatter so well not only because of its dexterity. Scientists have proven that these flies, like some animals, can plan their actions in advance.
- Another smart animal on our list is a cat. Kittens meow to their mothers, but adults do not need this to communicate with each other. The exception is when the cat wants to inform its owner about something.
By the way, cats purr not only while we pet them. These animals use this means of communication when they are injured, frightened, or during childbirth.
- If in cats, as in many animals, the care of offspring falls on the shoulders of mothers, then with ostriches, everything is completely different. The male of this species mates with females three times a year (while he can have several partners in one period). And after all the females lay eggs in one nest, the father begins to take care of the cubs.
- While birds incubate eggs, animals carry them in the womb. In order to give birth to a healthy cub, a female elephant needs 22 months, and a male North American opossum – only 8 days.
- Each animal species has its own specific differences in caring for offspring. For example, elephants don’t mind baby elephants using their trunk as a pacifier (like human babies use a pacifier or a finger). Sometimes this habit is so strong that it does not leave elephants even in adulthood.
- And newborn kangaroos are so small that they can fit in a teaspoon. And if we have already talked about these unique animals, here is something else interesting – kangaroos use their tail as a pole when jumping – this is how these animals run away when they feel danger. The longest possible jump of a kangaroo is 12 meters! At the same time, the height of the jump can reach up to 2 meters.
- Another type of animal that moves by jumping is fleas. Because their leg muscles are arranged like firing catapults, this is the only possible way for a flea to move.
Fleas are not only very biting and harmful to other animals, but also quite agile. The speed of the flea at the beginning of the jump exceeds the speed of the space rocket in orbit.
- For many people, only cockroaches can be more repulsive than fleas. But we greatly underestimate the abilities of these little friends. For example, did you know that a cockroach can live with its head cut off until it starves to death?
- What about rats? These animals reproduce so quickly that under friendly circumstances, one pair of rats could give birth to 1 million rodents in a year and a half. Rats are also animals that consume the least amount of water. And the kangaroo rat does not drink water at all. The fact is that this rodent needs so little liquid that what is contained in its food is enough for it.
- But not only rats. If necessary, emperor penguins can dive to a depth of up to half a kilometer. At the same time, the breath delay during immersion in water can reach up to 18 minutes!
- Crocodile swallow stones in order to dive to a greater depth. In addition, the “use” of stones allows to improve the digestion of these animals.
- But no matter how many stones crocodiles swallow, they cannot compare with whales. By the way, whales are considered not only the largest, but also the loudest animals us in the world. While a person can withstand a sound volume of 80 decibels, whales sing at a volume of up to 188 decibels.
- Another underwater inhabitants – sharks – “change” their teeth every 8 days. However, their teeth are so strong that they can only be compared to steel.
- In addition to animals, we also mentioned birds earlier. So, the albatross can sleep peacefully in flight. At the same time, its speed reaches up to 40 km/h.
- An owl can turn its head 360 degrees. And the color of her eyes indicates the way of life of the bird. So, owls with dark eyes mainly hunt at night, with orange eyes – at dusk, and with yellow eyes – during the day.
